Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) VPNs

The IPSec protocol has been around the longest, so there is a large number of vendors who support this protocol. IPSec provides a secure site-to-site connection at a reasonable cost, but requires slightly more expertise in configuring and maintaining the VPN.

Secure Socket Layer (SSL) VPNs

A newer protocol, SSL offers easier administration and maintenance while at the same time providing a very secure connection. It requires only server-side installation – no client-side software needed. While not as ubiquitous as IPSec VPNs, SSL VPNs are increasing in popularity.

Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) VPNs
